The Rats Are Doing Great, Thanks for Asking
Saw a headline yesterday about a gut bacterium from an amphibian that wiped out cancer cells in rats, 100% effective, no survivors on the tumour side of the ledger. Cool result. Genuinely cool. Then I made the mistake of reading the comments, which is always where the real story lives, and the top one was something like “rats getting universal healthcare before us, not fair.” Dozens of people piled on with variations of the same joke. Funny, but also the kind of joke that’s doing more work than it looks like.
Because underneath the gag is a real point: we are extraordinarily good at curing things in mice and rats, and extraordinarily slow and expensive at turning that into something a human can actually get prescribed. Someone in the thread mentioned Jonas Salk giving away the polio vaccine, no patent, no royalties, and it got upvoted heavily, the way anything about generosity in a system that mostly runs on the opposite instinct tends to. It’s a nice story. It’s also seventy years old and increasingly looks like an outlier rather than a template. The modern version is a company patenting a minor reformulation of an existing drug to buy another decade of exclusivity, and everyone in that comment section knew it without needing it explained.
I don’t think that’s cynicism, by the way. Patents exist for a reason, and a twenty year exclusivity window in exchange for publishing your method is a genuinely reasonable trade. I studied enough IT contracting and intellectual property stuff over the years to have some sympathy for the argument that without the incentive, a lot of this research doesn’t happen at all. But there’s a difference between protecting genuine innovation and gaming the clock, and the second thing has gotten very good at wearing the first thing’s clothes. Holding both of those thoughts at once, that patents are necessary and that the current version of them is being misused constantly, isn’t a contradiction I feel any urge to resolve. It’s just where the evidence sits.
The other thread that caught me was smaller, tucked further down, about extinction. Someone pointed out that this cancer-fighting compound came from an amphibian, and amphibians are one of the most rapidly vanishing groups on the planet right now, chytrid fungus, habitat loss, the whole grim ledger. The comment asked what other secrets we’re losing before we even know to look for them. That one landed harder for me than the healthcare joke, because it’s not abstract if you’ve spent any time near a Victorian creek in the last decade. The growling grass frog used to be common around Melbourne’s wetlands and is now something you mostly hear about from people doing frog surveys with torches at 11pm. We are, in a very literal sense, burning down a library we haven’t finished reading.
I don’t have a tidy way to land this. The research is exciting and worth being excited about, without the customary hedge, because good science that might help people is one of the few things I let myself be unguardedly enthusiastic about these days. And the same week’s news cycle is a reminder that discovery and access are two completely separate problems, and we’ve gotten much better at the first one than the second. What I keep coming back to is that the joke about rats having better healthcare than us is funny because it’s true in a narrow sense and not funny at all in the wider one. The gap between “we cured it in a lab” and “you can afford it” is where most of the actual argument about how we run healthcare and drug development lives, and it’s not going to be closed by a witty comment thread, however satisfying that thread is to scroll through with a coffee on a Tuesday morning.
